AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition: For the Pioneers of the Future!

The Vega architecture not only comes with a range of optimisations regarding the Graphics Core Next Architektur (GCN) of earlier GPU generations, it also introduces completely new components. The Vega GPU architecture is based primarily on four new pillars:

  • The High Bandwith Cache Controller (HBCC) enables a marked increase in the effective usage of the HBM modules (High Bandwidth Memory) in comparison to the Fiji range of GPUs in which the memory was first employed. The HBC controller also allows improved control over memory and increases the minimum number of Frames per Second (FPS) in many games by up to 100% and the maximum FPS by more than 50%. This occurs in conjunction with the effective doubling of the 16 GB HBM2-VRAM of the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition to 32 GB!
  • Rapid Packed Math (RPM) is a special feature of the Next-Gen Compute Unit (NCU) and utilises the extremely flexible core structure of the new Compute Units. For example RPM accelerates FP16 calculations to allows mathematically-oriented processes to be performed more quickly. When RPM is activated it doubles the number of calculations performed per second without requiring additional resources. Rapid Packed Math is of particular benefit to physics-based calculations, as seen in large explosions featuring in games.
  • The new programmable Geometry Pipeline found in the Vega architecture is capable of processing, thanks to its efficient load balancing, more polygons per clock cycle. The AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition offers a maximum geometry calculation of 11 polygons (using 4 Geometry Units) per clock, thereby offering twice as many as the Radeon R9 Fury X at 4 polygons per clock with 4 Geometry Units. Modelling applications in particular benefit from this capability, a capability which also allows large 3D models to be rendered virtually in real-time.
  • Behind the term Enhanced Pixel Engine stands the optimised Shader Unit design, offering particular benefits to performance at high resolutions (WQHD, UHD) and in Virtual Reality (VR). In specific terms the Enhanced Pixel Engine provides a new rasterizer technology which optimises cache localisation while creating more efficient rendering processes.
