AMD has released a new enthusiast-level platform: Ryzen Threadripper and a range of compatible X399-chipset motherboards. Including up to 32 threads with 16 cores and an incredible 64 PCI-Express lanes the Threadripper CPUs are not only ideal for gaming systems, but also form the perfect foundation for workstations and small servers. Up to four high-end graphics cards can be connected in SLI or CrossFire multi-GPU setups and ultra-fast PCIe NVMe SSDs can be connected directly to the CPU via four lanes each, while DDR4-RAM benefits from increased efficiency thanks to the quad-channel memory interface


AMD Ryzen Threadripper

AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper forms the link between the „Epyc“ server CPUs and the AMD Ryzen quad-core, hexa-core and octa-core CPUs for gamers and content creators (Ryzen 7 / 5 / 3) and all three CPU families are based on the „Zen“ microarchitecture. With comparatively high clock frequencies, something that benefits an extensive range of games an applications, as well as 16 cores with 32 threads for picture- and video editing, the Ryzen Threadripper represents a true multi-tasking platform.

64 PCIe 3.0 lanes are also provided by Threadripper CPUs, thereby benefiting gaming systems with compatibility for up to two high-end graphics cards as well as several NVMe PCIe SSDs. Theoretically up to 2 TB DDR4-RAM in quad-channel mode is also usable, and offers support for clock frequencies up to 2.666 MHz. This ensures sufficient capacity for professional applications as well as server functions. Depending on the motherboard, even higher clock frequencies are attainable via overclocking. AMD X399 Motherboards with Socket TR4

For enthusiast processors from the Ryzen Threadripper series, AMD has created the X399 chipset and the Socket TR4 platforms. With support for up to 64 PCIe lanes on offer with Ryzen Threadripper CPUs, X399 motherboards offer extensive compatibility options, such as support for up to three PCIe NVMe SSDs as well as up to four graphics cards with 16 and 8 lanes respectively.

With AMD’s X399 motherboards, NVMe SSDs are connected directly to the CPU and Threadripper reserves a whole 12 PCIe lanes for this purpose. This enables the extreme read- and write-speeds of NVMe M.2 and U.2 SSDs, without needing to resort to the slower method of redirecting data over the chipset. Four PCI-Express 3.0 lanes per PCIe NVMe slot are available, supporting connectivity for U.2 or M.2 formats, thereby enabling incredibly high data transfer speeds ranging up to 32 Gbit/s, a throughput almost eight times faster than SATA 6G.

The X399 chipset on Socket TR4 motherboards is connected to the processor via four PCIe lanes as usual and the X399 platform supports USB 3.1 natively, consequently no additional USB controllers are required in order to provide the ultra-fast USB standard with the maximum possible speeds of 10 Gbit/s per port. RAM can be driven in ultra-fast quad-channel mode on X399 motherboards, and depending on the motherboard in question, RAM frequencies of up to 4.000 MHz are possible.

Ryzen Threadripper CPUs can also be overclocked on X399 motherboards, taken together this makes the combination of Socket TR4 motherboards with Threadripper processors a true enthusiast-level platform perfect for gamers and content creators.
