In order to answer this question, Roman „der8auer“ Hartung has delidded a Ryzen 5 2600. Since CPUs from the Ryzen 2000- series are soldered with indium, the process was not as simple as it has traditionally been with most processors. Next, the heatspreader was carefully removed with the help of a razer blade to break the seal under the edges and sides. The CPU was subsequently placed in a Delid Die Mate and heated up to approximately 180° Celsius in the oven. <\/p>\n
The heat results in the indium melting, meaning the heatspreader can now be removed with the help of the Delid Die Mate. The liquid metal is then applied and the CPU is then stuck back together. For testing purposes, Roman used an ASUS Crosshair VII HERO Gaming AM4 motherboard with the X470 chipset and a Kraken X62 AiO for water cooling. <\/p>\n
Prior to delidding, the CPU was overclocked (4,1 GHz at 1,35 Volt) and run through Cinebench five times. This procedure was repeated by der8auer after the procedure was completed and temperature readings were taken with the help of HWInfo ausgelesen. As expected, the temperature difference was very small. As a result the maximum temperature (TDie on the board without offset) was measured at 60° Celsius after delidding. This is just 4° less than on the non-delidded CPU, which was recorded as running at 64° Celsius. <\/p>\n
Delidding a Ryzen 2000 processor ultimately wasn’t worth it, primarily due to the fact that indium is already a great thermal conductor. The time and effort it took to achieve this result was also relatively high, something that may or may not put off hardware enthusiasts and overclockers. And yet, even with a clock frequency of „just“ 5,6 GHz the Ryzen 7 2700X successfully achieved some first class benchmarks.
