The patent pending Skylake-X Direct Die Frame from overclocking champion der8auer is a masterpiece of German engineering. The CPU mounting frame completely replaces Intel's ILM (Integrated Loading Mechanism) as well as the CPU cooler mounting holes. This inconspicuous component unlocks a world of possibilities when it comes to CPU performance enhancement, leading to record breaking overclocks when paired with either standard- or liquid cooling.

Taking Overclocking to the Limit

Intel has employed the LGA (Land Grid Array) for attaching CPUs to their respective motherboards since 2004. Motherboards have, since that time, housed the connector pins that were previously attached to the underside of the CPU and - unlike AMD processors with PGA technology (Pin Grid Array), Intel CPUs have only had flat contact surfaces. To ensure that an Intel processor can remain securely seated in the socket, it is fastened into place using a foldable frame situated above the Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS).

The nickel-plated copper heat spreader, in the factory default setup, removes the heat produced by the CPU and transfers it into the CPU cooler which dissipates the thermal energy across a larger surface area than that available to the silicon alone. However the role of forming a tight seal between said components falls to a Thermal Interface Material (TIM) located between the heat spreader and the silicon chip. This standard thermal paste supplied with Intel processors offers relatively low levels of thermal conductivity, as a result of this it frequently struggles to maintain reasonable temperatures when faced with heavy overclocking.

In this scenario the effectiveness of the CPU cooler is irrelevant due to the fact that heat the heat build-up is taking place within the interior of the processor package itself. For a CPU to receive adequate cooling, even when being pushed to its limits via overclocking, enthusiasts swiftly remove the heat spreader with the help of the der8auer Delid Die Mate X, replacing the thermal paste with liquid metal and subsequently remounting the heat spreader. This results in a typical 10-20 °C reduction in the temperatures of Intel Skylake-X processors. The Skylake-X Direct Die Frame removes the need for two further layers consisting of the heat spreader and thermal paste, allowing temperatures to fall by a further 5-10 °C. This results in a marked improvement in overclocking performance.

The outer edge of the der8auer Skylake-X Direct Die Frame is located a mere 0,1 mm below the silicon chip itself, effectively preventing any unwanted tilting of the CPU cooler and protecting against damage. Furthermore, the black anodized coating isolates the aluminium of the Direct Die Frame as it is no longer electrically conductive. As a result the SK-X DDF can be seated safely and securely against the contact area of the CPU. Installation of the SK-X DDF requires that the Intel socket retention module first be removed, this then allows the bundled back plate to be attached to the reverse of the motherboard with adhesive pads, the CPU inserted, and the frame secured by means of four screws. The SK-X DDF is manufactured according to extremely tight tolerances to ensure an equal distribution of downward force. This helps to maintain optimum contact between the motherboard and CPU while ensuring all devices, such as PCIe cards or RAM modules, are recognized correctly.

Note on Compatibility: The removal of the integrated heat spreader results in a small reduction in the mounting height of the CPU cooler. Compatibility with watercoolers from EKWB, Aquacomputer as well as AiO watercoolers from Corsair and NZXT are guaranteed to fit. Direct Die Cooling

Im Video von Roman ist noch nicht auf die neuen i9-9900K CPU's eingegangen worden. Die Platine und der Die ist dicker, die CPU somit höher. Der Kühler dürfte wieder auf dem DIE aufliegen (bitte mal prüfen). Durchbiegen dürfte auch kein Problem mehr sein. In unserer kleinen Firma Arbeiten wir mit 3D CAD. Die CAD unterstützt kein Multicore. Deshalb ist eine hohe Single Core Leistung wichtig. Skylake (Xeon) können hier momentan (Dez.2018) nicht mit dem i9-9900K mithalten. Wäre toll, wenn Roman sein Video noch mit einem Statement hierzu erweitert.


Vorsicht mit dem Anpressdruck!

Nachdem im Video vom “nötigen Anpressdruck bei 2066 Pins” gesprochen wurde, haben in die Schrauben ordentlich fest angezogen. Führte dazu, dass 2 RAM-Bänke nicht erkannt wurden! Schrauben etwas gelöst und alles läuft wie gewünscht. Als Info für andere, die wie ich vielleicht denken, sie hätten die CPU beim Köpfen beschädigt ;D

Kühlleistung ist klasse. I9-7940x hab ich jetzt bei 4,5GHz und down Temps lassen noch einiges zu. Bin aber erstmal nur froh, dass es läuft mit allen RAM-Bänken!

Wenn es an die Grenzen gehen soll ein Muss

Tut das was es eben soll.
Mein 7900x ist leider ein extrem heiß laufendes Exemplar. Schade eigentlich, da er sich sehr gut takten lässt. Hatte am Anfang über 100°c in Prime bei 4.5GHz ungeköpft bei einer Costom Wakü mit 480 Radiator.
Nach dem Köpfen:
4.8GHz @1.25v bei 105°C in Prime und max 65 beim Gaming.
jetzt mit einer Direct-Die Kühlung und einem EK Supremacy Evo sowie Conductonaut auf dem Die
max. 85°C bei 4.8Ghz 1.25v
max. 96°C bei 4.9Ghz 1.28v.
und.... Naja:
max. 105°C be 5.0Ghz 1.34v.
Bin insgesamt wirklich begeistert.
Vlt kann mir ein OC Experte mal sagen, was so ein guter Wert für den 24/7 Betrieb wäre. Dazu sein gesagt, dass es ein nahezu reiner Gaming PC ist.
Selbst bei Planet Coaster (cpu lastiges Spiel 60-80% Cpu-auslastung) erreiche ich nie die 70°c

Cheap for what it offers.
After very careful installation, my I9-7980XE max temperatures ( Wprime1024 and Asus Real bench ), fell by 7c. Now the 18 core processor can run at 4.7ghz with 1.22V only and 1.80VccIN only, with the hottest core not exceeding 82c.

  • Hardwareluxx Forum - Skylake-X Direct Die Frame

    Für Enthusiasten, die der kompromisslosen Leistung nachjagen und Overclocker, die ihre Hardware ans Limit bringen wollen, ist Direct-Die der beste Weg ihr Ziel zu erreichen. Die Installation des Direct Die Frames könnte leichter nicht sein, wer seine CPU schonmal geköpft hat, der wird damit gar keine Probleme haben. Jemand, der im Markt ist, sich solch ein Nieschen-Produkt zu kaufen, weiß auch warum er es will und was er tut. 
    Und wenn solche Ergebnisse bereits auf einem 16-Kerner mit Wasserkühlung erreicht werden konnten, bin ich natürlich schon gespannt was die OC-Schwergewichte vom Kaliber Dancop (gern auch mal wieder der8auer selbst!) damit anstellen können. Ich habe da so ein Gefühl, dass das Team Hardwareluxx demnächst auf HWbot wieder ein paar Rekorde einfährt.
