Product information - Rift S Virtual Reality Headset

Virtual Reality is the future of interactive entertainment and this future began back in 2012 with Oculus VR. With a surprisingly successful Kickstarter campaign, the young business set off a renaissance in the world of VR technology and collected 2.4 billion US Dollars for the development of the first dev kits. This represented a full 974 percent of the original goal. Supported by famous game developers and plenty of media excitement, development carried on at a steady pace until Oculus VR was eventually purchased by 2014 Facebook in 2014 - now for a total of 2 billion US Dollars. The Oculus Rift S continues miraculous success story of Oculus and VR. This brand new variant comes without the need for external tracking, something which makes its use and setup much easier in comparison to earlier devices. Moreover, the new Inside-Out Tracking also tracks head- and body movement in addition to enabling natural-feeling tracking of hand movements with six DOF (Degrees of Freedom).

The Features of the Oculus Rift S VR Headset at a Glance:

  • Fast-Switch LCD with 2.560 x 1.440 resolution & RGB Stripe Matrix
  • Ultra large 110° FOV for maximum immersion
  • Accurate and lag-free Inside-Out head tracking thanks to five cameras integrated into the headset
  • Motion tracking for six DOF (Degrees of Freedom)
  • Ergonomic halo design & rotary dial enabling convenient size adjustment
  • Movement sensitive 3D audio with integrated headphones (swappable)
  • Integrated microphone for games & voice chat
  • Includes two Oculus Touch motion controllers

The Features of the Oculus Touch Motion Controller at a Glance:

  • Intuitive hand controls with ergonomic design and ingenious touch controls
  • Two controllers with a total of 10x buttons + 2x analogue sticks & 2x touch thumb rests
  • Precise and lag-free motion tracking thanks to Oculus Insight
  • Extensive motion tracking capabilities for six degrees of freedom
  • Integrated finger tracking via headset

New Generation of Advanced VR Technology

The VR pioneers at Oculus gave the Rift S a Fast-Switch LCD with an RGB Stripe-Matrix. Instead of the previous standard of two subpixels, the screen now offers three subpixels. The resolution of 2.160 x 1.200 has also now been increased to 2.560 x 1.440, making that 1.280 x 1.440 per eye. The increased pixel density and the greater number of subpixels ensures that, in comparison with its immediate predecessor, the so-called Screen Door Effect (SDE) is now minimised along with unwanted god-rays and other undesirable lighting effects. This is also thanks in part to the new Fresnel lenses. The change from OLED displays to LCD also results in a marked increase to the sharpness of the picture. The screen refresh rate of both displays is set to 80 Hz, lower than its predecessor which was 90 Hz. This reduces the load on hardware, although the hardware requirements as a whole remain the same as previously despite the higher resolution.

The user's interpupillary distance to the lenses is now digitally adjusted. The optimal interpupillary distance of a user is 61.5 to 65.5 mm, previously it was 56 to 75 mm. The distance of the lenses to the eyes themselves (diopter adjustment) can still be adjusted a little by the headset thanks to the halo design itself, a rotary wheel on the back also makes this particularly easy. In addition to the visual improvements, the 3D audio system is integrated with HRTF technology (Head-Related Transfer Function) and the miniaturised loudspeakers integrated into the headset also ensure aural immersion thanks to the motion-dependent real-time surround sound. A 3,5 mm jack is present so that you can use your own headphones if you prefer. The Oculus Rift S is connected to a five-metre cable for use with a free DisplayPort 1.2 connector on your graphics card, and a separate USB 3.0 port is also required.

System Requirements of the Oculus Rift S

Minimum Hardware Requirements
  • Processor (CPU): Intel Core i3-6100 / AMD Ryzen 3 1200, FX4350 or higher
  • Graphics card (GPU): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti / AMD Radeon RX 470 or higher
  • Alternative graphics card (GPU): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 / AMD Raden R9 290 or higher
  • Memory (RAM): min. 8 GB RAM
  • Display output: DisplayPort 1.2 on graphics card
  • USB ports necessary: 1x USB 3.0 (for headset)
  • Operating System: Windows 10 or higher

Recommended Min. Requirements
  • Processor (CPU): Intel Core i5-4590 / AMD Ryzen 1500X or better
  • Graphics card (GPU): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 / AMD Radeon RX 480 or higher
  • Alternative graphics card (GPU): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 / AMD Radeon R9 290 or higher
  • Memory (RAM): min. 8 GB RAM
  • Display output: DisplayPort 1.2 on graphics card
  • USB ports necessary: 1x USB 3.0 (for headset)
  • Operating System: Windows 10

Attention: Operating the Oculus Rift S VR headset via DisplayPort 1.2 requires a free DisplayPort 1.2 interface on the graphics card or the presence of a compatible adapter, should the primary DisplayPort output already be in use by a monitor for example. The Oculus Rift cannot be connected to the DisplayPort connector of an on-board integrated GPU e.g. from Intel. An adapter for use with a Mini-DisplayPort is included.

Advanced Tacking System

The Oculus Rift S now uses an Inside-Out tracking system for tracking the movement and position of the head. This eliminates the need for an external IR-LED sensor like its predecessor. Instead a total of five cameras are installed on the exterior of the headset. They register the position of the user in the game area as previously defined by the software, the movement of the headset, but also the movements of the two controllers as well. There is also a warning system present for when the player moves outside the playing area. At the touch of a button however, Passthrough+ can be activated to use the cameras as a means of seeing your immediate surroundings when necessary. The accuracy of the Inside-Out Tracking system is remarkably high at sub 1 mm at very low latencies and without delays that exceed the threshold of perception for most people.

The Full VR Experience: Oculus Rift S VR Headset with Motion Tracking

Thanks to the Oculus Touch input devices, the Oculus Rift S VR headset offers not only motion tracking for your head, but also for your hands - meaning that you can enjoy greater immersion and control over your virtual environments. The ergonomically shaped controllers, one for the right- and one for the left hand - are encompassed by a circular sensor ring, in which invisible IR diodes are embedded. Depending on the game or application, the controllers can act as anything from a painter's brush to a tool or a sword with ease. Both controllers are powered by included AA batteries

Natural Gestures, Motion Tracking & Force Feedback

The keyboard layout of the controllers is similar to that of the Xbox One gamepad, but split between two hands. Each controller has a trigger for the index or middle finger, a grip button (which you press by clenching your hand to your fist), an analogue stick, two action buttons, and a small menu button. In addition to the analogue sticks there is a capacitive thumb rest with a comfortable rubberised surface. Both the thumb rests and the buttons can also register whether they are simply touched by the user, even without pressing a button. Combined with simple gesture recognition, this allows individual hand and independent finger movements to be simulated in VR. Last but not least, the controllers are equipped with force feedback motors for vibrations, for example in the event of collisions with objects in the virtual world.
