Sound Systems
Sound Systems & Amplifiers
A modern sound system consists of at least two speakers and can additionally include more satellite speakers and a subwoofer. Depending on the purpose, the various products are categorized into 2.0, 2.1, 5.1, and 7.1 sound systems. The first number represents the number of satellite speakers, and the second number after the dot represents the subwoofer responsible for the bass.
Decent Bass Even Without a Subwoofer
However, a sound system without a subwoofer, consisting of only two speakers, can also deliver decent bass. The key factor here is the RMS power, which is reflected in the power rating. The higher this rating, the stronger the bass. Of course, it is also important to consider the intended use of the sound system. If you want a sound system because you enjoy watching films and want to create a proper cinema feeling with surround sound, a 7.1 or 5.1 sound system is recommended. If the speakers are used with a PC, primarily for desktop use and not mainly for films, a 2.0 or 2.1 system is sufficient. At the very least, highs, lows, and mids should be well reproduced.
Additional amplifiers may be useful. These are often integrated into sound cards but can also be purchased as external devices in various forms with different connections.
Key considerations when purchasing a sound system include:
- Which sound system (2.0, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1) is right for your needs?
- What is the RMS power of the sound system?
- What connections does the sound system have (RCA, jack, TOSLINK, USB)?
- What certifications does the sound system have (Dolby Digital, DTS, THX, etc.)?
