The Thermal Grizzly WireView Pro GPU - New Edition with Increased Safety
The WireView Pro GPU is the evolution of the device for measuring the power consumption of graphics cards. Developed in collaboration with Jon “elmor” Sandström, the WireView Pro GPU connects to the 12VHPWR power connector of the graphics card and is linked to the power supply via the power cable. Data on power consumption is displayed on an OLED screen.
What does the WireView Pro GPU do?
The WireView Pro GPU allows for the measurement of the power consumption of graphics cards and records this data to determine power usage. This data can be used, among other things, to calculate the electricity costs of a graphics card or to compare power consumption with other graphics cards.
At the same time, the measurement of power consumption can determine the electricity usage of graphics cards over a certain period or during specific applications. Additionally, peak power consumption ("Peaks") can be detected, which may occur during the operation of current high-end graphics cards.
The displayed information of the WireView Pro GPU at a glance:
- Current power consumption in watts (W)
- Current voltage in volts (V), current in amperes (A)
- Minimum and maximum power consumption in watts (W)
- Average power consumption over 60 seconds (RAVG in W) and total power consumption (E in WH)
- Display of measured temperatures from individual temperature sensors (°C)
What’s new about the WireView Pro GPU?
With connector detection, temperature sensors, and an acoustic warning signal, the Pro version has been enhanced with additional features. The connector detection of the WireView Pro GPU identifies whether a connection cable specified for 150 watts, 300 watts, 450 watts, or 600 watts is being used.
Two temperature sensors located on the board at the power connections monitor the temperatures at the power connectors. Up to 600 watts of power can flow through the connectors, causing them and the board around the two connectors to heat up significantly. When a set temperature threshold is exceeded, an acoustic alarm is triggered.
Two additional included temperature sensors (10K NTC) can be connected via cables. Two sensors with cable lengths of 5 cm and 20 cm are included. Additionally, the alarm can be triggered if the adjustable limit for current (amperes) is exceeded.
Which WireView Pro GPU is needed?
Regardless of the type and number of PCIe power connectors on the graphics card, their orientation is decisive for choosing the right WireView GPU. The WireView GPU is available in "Normal" (N), "Reverse" (R) versions and in this 90° variant.
If the graphics card is equipped with PCIe power connectors where the retaining clips of the connectors are oriented away from the PCB, the N variant is required. In the case of normal horizontal installation of the graphics card, this would be at the bottom. This variant is the most common type of connector orientation.
If the graphics card is equipped with PCIe power connectors where the retaining clips of the connectors are oriented towards the PCB, the R variant is required. In the case of normal horizontal installation of the graphics card, this would be at the top. This can be identified by the fact that there are cutouts in the PCB for the retaining lugs of the connector.
Warning, important note: Risk of injury!
Depending on the graphics card used, especially in the case of the GeForce RTX 5090, up to 575 watts of power can flow through the WireView connections. The resulting heat can raise the temperature of the board at the WireView connector to up to 60 degrees Celsius in the case of an air-cooled graphics card. In the case of a water-cooled graphics card without airflow, the PCB of the WireView can heat up to 100 degrees Celsius! The WireView housing should not be touched during operation. After turning off the system, allow the WireView to cool down before handling it.
