Routers
In almost every household, there is a router, which nowadays is usually the central element of the home network, providing internet access and interconnecting devices, mostly via Wi-Fi. But routers can do much more than that! Popular additional features include the almost always used DHCP server, Voice-over-IP, DECT, VPN, Dynamic DNS - and not least, integrated firewalls that ensure the security of the devices behind the router and their users.
The Gateway to the World
There are many criteria to consider when finding the ideal router - here are the most important:
- Type of Internet Access - VDSL, ADSL2+, Cable, or without a modem, for example, for use behind another router from the internet provider
- Wi-Fi Standard - Is Wi-Fi according to the N standard sufficient, or should it be the turbo with the AC standard in the 5 GHz network? Should 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks be possible simultaneously?
- VoIP and DECT - With the increasing spread of all-IP networks, routers without these functions are slowly losing significance. However, if you do not use a landline phone at all, a cheaper router without telephony functions will suffice.
- Connections - routers differ in the number (usually four) and speed of their LAN ports, as well as in some models, their USB ports, e.g., for printers and mass storage devices.
