Gamepads for PC and Gaming
Gamepads are suitable for a wide range of games and genres and offer a compact alternative to mouse and keyboard. Especially in action games, racing games, sports games, fighting games and platformers, a controller enables intuitive controls. Depending on the model, gamepads differ in terms of connectivity, stick technology, button layout and compatibility with PCs and consoles.
What Should You Consider When Buying a Controller?
Compatibility
Before buying, you should know which platform you need a controller for. Xbox controllers cannot be used with a PlayStation 5, and PlayStation controllers cannot be used with an Xbox. On PC, the selection is broader: Many Xbox, PlayStation and multi-platform controllers can also be used with Windows. Switch controllers also cannot be used with an Xbox or PlayStation 5.
Analogue Sticks and Sensors
The analogue sticks of a gamepad can use different sensor technologies. Conventional models detect movement using potentiometers, while Hall effect sticks use magnetic fields and are therefore less susceptible to mechanical wear and stick drift. TMR sticks also use magnetic sensors and provide precise detection of stick movements while consuming little power.
Buttons and Triggers
Depending on the gamepad, additional back buttons or paddles may be available alongside the standard input buttons. On supported models, programmable buttons can be assigned individual functions, making important inputs easier to reach. Analogue triggers also allow gradual input, which is particularly useful for accelerating and braking in racing games.
Ergonomics and Stick Layout
Gamepads differ in their shape, weight and analogue stick arrangement. With a symmetrical layout, both sticks are positioned at the same height, while an asymmetrical layout places one stick higher than the other. Which layout feels more comfortable depends on your personal preference. Size, grip design and weight also affect how comfortable the gamepad feels during longer gaming sessions.
PlayStation vs. Xbox Controllers for PC
Both PlayStation and Xbox controllers can be used with a PC depending on the model. Xbox controllers use an asymmetrical stick layout and are supported directly by many Windows games. PlayStation controllers, on the other hand, use a symmetrical stick layout and may offer additional features such as a touchpad or adaptive triggers, depending on the model. Whether all controller features are available on PC depends on the individual game and connection type.
Wired or Wireless Gamepad?
Wired gamepads are usually connected via USB and do not require a rechargeable battery or disposable batteries. Wireless gamepads, on the other hand, provide greater freedom of movement and connect to the PC via Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz wireless, depending on the model. A 2.4 GHz connection usually uses a USB receiver and is designed for low latency. Bluetooth does not require an additional receiver as long as your PC supports Bluetooth. The available connection options depend on the individual gamepad.
For a more targeted selection, you can also filter gamepads by platform, brand or colour. This helps you find models that match your setup and preferences more quickly.
FAQ – Gamepads
Which Gamepad Is Suitable for PC?
In general, any gamepad that supports Windows or your chosen operating system can be used with a PC. In addition to compatibility, consider the preferred connection type, stick layout, buttons, triggers and other features. Many Xbox and PlayStation controllers can also be used with a PC.
Which Games Are Suitable for a Gamepad?
Gamepads are particularly suitable for action games, platformers, racing games, sports games and fighting games. Whether a game supports gamepad controls depends on the individual title and platform.
What Is Stick Drift on a Gamepad?
Stick drift occurs when a gamepad registers movement of an analogue stick even though the stick is not being moved. One possible cause is wear in the sensor technology. Magnetic technologies such as Hall effect or TMR do not rely on the mechanical contact typically used by potentiometers to detect position and can therefore be less susceptible to wear.
Can I Use a PlayStation or Xbox Controller on PC?
Many Xbox and PlayStation controllers can also be used with a PC. Supported connection methods and features depend on the controller, the game and, where applicable, the software being used.
What Are the Benefits of Additional Buttons and Paddles on a Gamepad?
Additional buttons or paddles provide extra inputs without requiring you to take your thumbs off the analogue sticks, for example. On programmable models, you can often assign specific inputs or functions to them.
Can I Use Multiple Gamepads on a PC at the Same Time?
Yes, multiple gamepads can generally be connected to a PC at the same time. Whether they can be used together depends on how many controllers the individual game or multiplayer mode supports.
