External Hard Drive Cases

If you want to keep your data such as video, music, photo, or text files truly secure, you should seriously consider external storage. This means storing the bits and bytes not on an internal hard drive or SSD - which is located inside the PC case and permanently connected there - but on a storage medium that is outside the computer and only temporarily connected or turned on. The many advantages are obvious: First, the computer's energy consumption is reduced because the external drive is not constantly in operation. The risk of hard drive failure also decreases the less a drive runs.

That is why it makes so much sense to back up data (e.g., from the operating system itself) on an external hard drive in an external enclosure. Here they are also stored more securely for two additional reasons. On the one hand, they are not exposed to the immediate risk of malware infection; on the other hand, the data on the external drive is protected from unauthorized access in the truest sense of the word. You can practically even hide or lock away an external HDD in a safe place at home.

External Enclosures - Different Types of Data "Treasuries"

One should not overlook the flexibility that a storage medium in an external hard drive enclosure offers. The external drives can be transported from one computer to another and, depending on the HDD or SSD model used, store huge amounts of data. There are various types of external hard drive enclosures on the market:

  • Drive enclosures for 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch hard drives or SSDs
  • External cases with USB connection (2.0/3.0), Thunderbolt interface, and (now rather outdated) eSATA interface
  • Simple external hard drive enclosures and more sophisticated ones with features like hot-swapping, RAID compatibility (two or more drives), and/or integrated backup management

Depending on the individual needs of the user and the intended use, there is a suitable external hard drive enclosure available for every drive.
