Fan Power Adapters

Power adapters are used for connecting fans in PC systems. Numerous different models in various designs supply fans with 2-, 3-, and 4-pin connections. Some of them also serve to control the speed of the connected fans.

Power Adapters for Optimal Power Supply to Fans

Power adapters are ideal for optimizing the ventilation concept of your computer:

  • If the motherboard does not have enough fan connectors, additional fans can be powered using power adapters.
  • Some models supply the fan with less than the maximum +12 volts, providing a lower operating voltage. Such adapters are often referred to as low-noise adapters. By reducing the voltage, the fan speed decreases, and so does the noise level.
  • Some power adapters offer the possibility to control fans via a PWM control signal. While the motherboard can only control one fan through one channel, the power adapter multiplies this signal and controls multiple fans.
  • There are also simple 3- and 4-pin extension cables. These are particularly helpful in very large cases when the distance between the fan and the power connector on the motherboard or the fan controller is too great.

It is important not to overload the power adapter being used. Using more fans or more powerful models than intended by the manufacturer of the adapter can lead to permanent damage to the power adapter or even the motherboard. Additionally, it is advisable to check the proper functioning of the connected fans, as not all fans are compatible with all forms of control.
