40 Inch Monitors and Above
Monitors above 40 Inches: Top-Tier Technology in a Large Format
Among monitor sizes, a diagonal of over 30 inches (about 76 cm) is considered huge, making these screens ideal for use in living rooms, offices, and premium gaming setups. Monitors with more than 30 inches (0.76 metres) of screen diagonal don't differ much from smaller monitors in terms of considerations. However, it's particularly important to focus on high-resolution and good contrast ratio. A standard Full-HD resolution can appear pixelated at larger sizes. Especially when the viewer is close to the screen, medium resolutions like 1080p are often insufficient for optimal subjective image quality. Therefore, resolutions of 2560 x 1440 pixels (WQHD standard) and higher are particularly worthwhile for monitors over 30 inches.
Depending on the intended use, a 30-inch monitor or larger model may benefit from the 4K UHD standard, especially if you want to watch Blu-rays, play HD games, or replace multiple smaller screens in an office setting with one large display. To support these higher resolutions, very large monitors should also feature a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt2 connection and a compatible graphics card.
Monitors Over 30 Inches – High-End Technology Can Also Be Compact
- The most essential distinguishing feature of monitors, in general, is the panel technology. Most LCD monitors use proven TN panels, which are currently being increasingly replaced by advanced IPS/PLS and MVA/PVA panels with higher viewing angle stability and better contrast values.
- Other critical features include the aforementioned resolution (such as 1080p/Full HD or 4K/UltraHD), brightness, response time, or refresh rate - from 60 Hz to 120 Hz or even 240 Hz in 3D-capable gaming monitors.
- Compared to interference-prone analogue VGA connections, digital DVI or HDMI connections offer better image quality. However, a DisplayPort is preferable for gaming, primarily due to the higher refresh rate. With integrated DVB-TV tuners, many screens offer additional connections (e.g., SCART or Component Video).
- Other features may include height adjustability, pivot, swivel and tilt functions, multi-monitor operation (such as AMD Eyefinity), integrated speakers, touchscreen functions, or compatibility with NVIDIA's G-SYNC and AMD's AdaptiveSync.
