Cases & Modding

Gone are the days when computer cases were purely functional. Today, PC enthusiasts have a vast array of cases to choose from in terms of size, shape, material, and color to house their systems. Cases with tempered glass side panels and RGB LED lighting are particularly popular, allowing users to showcase their gaming hardware. Many modern cases forego optical drive bays in favor of USB ports, reflecting the increasing importance of connectivity. Additionally, computer cases are evolving into works of art, featuring stunning designs and innovative features like integrated distroplates for custom water cooling setups.

PC Cases in All Sizes and Shapes

Computer cases can be categorized in various ways, with size being one of the most common criteria:

  • Full-Tower Cases (also known as Big-Tower) are the largest cases, aside from server racks, and typically offer ample space for both hardware and cooling.
  • Mid-Tower Cases are the most common cases, striking a balance between size and hardware compatibility.
  • Mini-Towers - such as Mini-ITX cases - are the smallest of the three tower cases and often come with limitations in terms of hardware compatibility.
  • HTPC cases (Home Theater PC) are particularly small, and usually require specialized hardware for installation.

Another way to categorize PC cases is by their form factor:

  • Towers are the most common form factor for PC cases and are typically much taller than they are long and wide.
  • Cubes or Cube cases are cube-shaped, with dimensions in height, width, and depth being almost identical.
  • Benchtables are open cases used for hardware testing, mostly completely open, allowing for quick hardware changes.
  • Showcases feature standout designs and are difficult to categorize into other types due to their often very unique shapes.

Computer cases can also be sorted and categorized according to other criteria, such as materials (aluminum cases), pre-installed noise dampening, the presence of RGB LED lighting, tempered glass side panels, and even by brand branding (e.g., MSI Gaming, Gigabyte Aorus, ASUS ROG certified).

PC components require sufficient space and cooling. Especially with gaming hardware for gaming PCs, one should consider the dimensions of the components. However, gaming PCs are not the only custom computers that benefit from a good case. PC enthusiasts and content creators often opt for cases with multiple radiator mounting points to accommodate a custom water cooling setup inside the case.

Accessories & Modding: Customizing Your PC

Computer cases can be transformed into custom PC cases with a little effort. The process of modifying a case is also known as case modding. There are even championships where case modders compete for titles with their custom PC cases. But even installing additional fans or RGB LED strips is a form of customization.

Manufacturer-specific accessory sets are available to assist with this process, tailored for specific cases or series of cases. There are also third-party vendors that offer universal accessories for PC case modification. For example, Caseking offers soundproofing kits that can be installed inside the case. Other vendors provide distroplates, which are installed at designated locations in the case to offer more options for custom water cooling setups.
