Gaming monitors with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels or higher are known as 4K monitors or Ultra-HD monitors (UHD). With a 4K display, you experience your games in stunning clarity, making them appear even more realistic.

If you're looking for a PC monitor with high-resolution and crystal-clear images, a 4K monitor is an excellent choice. You can use 4K computer monitors for various purposes, including gaming, office work, streaming, and more. More and more users are choosing to pair their desktop PCs or laptops with a 4K monitor to create a high-quality desk setup.

4K or UHD?

Ultra HD is a video format that actually includes two different resolutions: 4K and 8K. 4K, with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, also known as UHD-I, offers four times the pixels of Full HD. 8K, or UHD-II, with a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels, is still rare in PC monitors.

4K and Ultra-HD monitors can display incredibly sharp images where individual pixels cannot be seen with the naked eye, even when sitting very close to the screen. Because of this, most 4K/UHD monitors are somewhat larger, typically starting at a diagonal size of 24 inches (about 61 cm).

It's important to ensure that the corresponding hardware is up to date when using 4K/UHD monitors. Graphics cards should be from the current generation and should have at least a DisplayPort 1.2 port. DisplayPort 1.2 is currently the only interface that can display 4K resolution at 60 Hz. In the future, the new HDMI 2.0 standard will also become more prevalent.

Choosing the Right 4K Ultra HD Gaming Monitor

4K Ultra-HD monitors are similar to other monitors except for their higher resolution. Therefore, you should still consider the following features:

  • Aside from diagonal size, the most important distinguishing feature of a monitor is its panel technology. The majority of LCD monitors use proven TN panels, which are increasingly being replaced by advanced IPS/PLS and MVA/PVA panels with higher viewing angle stability and better contrast values.
  • Other significant features include the already mentioned refresh rate, contrast sharpness, brightness, and response time. 4K/Ultra-HD monitors particularly benefit from a colour depth of 10-bit (approx. 1 billion colours).
  • Additional features might include height adjustability, pivot, swivel, and tilt functions, multi-monitor operation (such as AMD Eyefinity), built-in speakers, touchscreen capabilities, or compatibility with NVIDIA's G-SYNC or AMD's Adaptive Sync.
  • A popular feature in UHD monitors is support for High Dynamic Range (HDR), a video format with an extended range of brightness levels. This requires a graphics card with a DisplayPort 1.4 output and a compatible cable!

Monitors with "2K Resolution," "4K Cinema," and Ultra-Wide Displays

In addition to high-resolution 4K monitors with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio, ultra-wide displays are very popular. These offer a resolution of 3,440 x 1,440 pixels (UWQHD) with a 21:9 aspect ratio and are the ultra-wide version of 16:9 WQHD monitors with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. The WQHD resolution is also known as 2K resolution and is the sweet spot between Full-HD and Ultra HD. Monitors with the less common resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels are often referred to as "4K Cinema Monitors" and are popular in home theatre setups.
