- High compatibility and easy system integration thanks to NASware 3.0
Details of the Western Digital Red Pro 20 TB features
The Western Digital Red Pro 20 TB is filled with helium and hermetically sealed. Helium has only one-seventh the density of air, so replacing air with helium inside a hard drive significantly reduces the turbulence caused by the spinning disks. This also reduces power consumption and temperature, allowing Western Digital to fit more platters into a traditional 3.5-inch form factor.
The massive capacity is also made possible by the so-called optiNAND technology. Instead of DRAM, the hard drive is managed by NAND memory, which offers much higher capacity. This allows for the large number of operations needed for a 20 TB capacity. Additionally, the hard drive consumes only 6.1 watts during operation and runs approximately four to five degrees cooler than standard hard drives. With 3.6 watts idle and 0.9 watts in standby mode, the other power consumption values of the Western Digital Red Pro 20 TB are also very low, which benefits not only the NAS system but also your wallet.
At 268 MB/s, the limit of the SATA interface is far from being reached, but the SATA 6G here offers not only the advantage of higher bandwidth. The protocol has also been significantly improved to increase energy efficiency and optimise the transmission of multiple simultaneous high-bandwidth data streams.
Optimised for NAS
NAS is an impressive interface that allows for the effortless and fast wireless transfer of data between different devices. The Western Digital Red Pro drives are equipped with NASware 3.0, which increases system compatibility and allows seamless integration into existing network infrastructures.
3D Active Balance Plus in the WD Red Pro is an advanced two-plane balancing technology. It improves the overall performance and reliability of the drive. Hard drives without proper balance can cause excessive vibrations and noise in a system with multiple drives, reducing the lifespan of the drives and causing performance to degrade over time. This is why Western Digital promotes its 20 TB drive with an impressive mean time between failures (MTBF) of 2,500,000 hours.
