External Cables
To connect peripheral devices to a PC system, users need external cables for data transmission or power supply. External cables transmit electrical signals or energy, usually via a copper core, and come in various forms and constructions, such as spiral, flat ribbon, or round cables. Twisted-pair cables consist of multiple twisted pairs of wires, and coaxial cables are characterized by a bipolar internal structure.
External Cables Transmit Data and Energy
Whether data cables, power cables, USB cables, or network cables - external connection cables, extension cables, or adapters come in various lengths and strengths with different plugs and sockets for diverse applications. If a plug or socket does not fit, a suitable adapter can be the solution.
- For data transmission and simultaneous power supply of computer peripherals or consumer electronics, universally usable USB cables have established themselves as the standard. Connection cables, extensions, and adapters with mini or micro USB plugs are now used for a variety of devices, such as smartphones, tablets, e-book readers, MP3 players, or card readers. Data transmission for external hard drives often occurs via external SATA cables, or eSATA cables.
- Network cables reliably network home PCs and ensure an interference-free and fast connection to the Internet. LAN cables are divided into different categories. The most common variant today is the BASE-T version of Category 5 (Cat 5/5e) with RJ-45 connectors for gigabit LAN networks, while for 10GB Ethernet, external Ethernet cables of Category 6/6a or higher must be used.
- ATX, SFX, or TFX power supplies are connected to the power outlet with cold device connectors or external power plugs. Extension cables increase the reach when needed. Other external cables include Firewire cables for photo and video cameras or data carriers.
