Input Devices

Input devices for the PC are used to send control commands to your computer and act as the interface between human and machine. The most important representatives of this product category are the keyboard and mouse, but gamepads and joysticks are also input devices.

What types of input devices are there?

  • Mice and matching mousepads
  • Keyboards and custom keyboards
  • Game controllers
  • Webcams

The keyboard as a PC input device

Which came first, the keyboard or the mouse? It was the keyboard. Modeled after the typewriter, it was the first input device for the PC. Long before graphical user interfaces existed, computer users navigated through programs solely with the keyboard. Even today, the keyboard is indispensable as it allows for fast and precise inputs. The areas of application are very different and more varied than in the past, but the keyboard has established itself for PC and Mac and could not be replaced by the touchscreen.

The mouse as a PC input device

The next legendary invention was the mouse. The classic ball mouse of the 90s has now been replaced. Just before the turn of the millennium, the first optical gaming mice came onto the market and captured the hearts of PC users and gamers because the tedious cleaning of the fine mechanics inside the PC mouse was finally a thing of the past.

Today, there are numerous wireless and wired mice with different technologies that allow precise control of the graphical user interface of the operating system - and of course precise headshots in first-person shooters.

Game controllers as input devices

Game controllers are a matter of taste: some love them, others hate them. The fact is that not all applications can be perfectly controlled with a mouse and keyboard. With a game controller, many genres are easier to play. Gamepads are now not only at home on consoles but are also used by many PC gamers, for example, for emulators and beat-em-ups, but also for playing shooters and racing games.
