When the first headphones were developed at the beginning of the 20th century, it was not foreseeable what immense variety this invention would one day bring. In the 1980s, headphones became mainstream with the HiFi boom and have since permeated all aspects of human life. Triggered by the success of the Walkman, Discman, MiniDisc players, and finally MP3 players, today there are headphones made from all conceivable materials in various shapes and colours for diverse applications (e.g. HiFi, studio, sport, mobile phone, or DJ).

The range of headphones includes over-ear, on-ear, and lightweight in-ear headphones, typically equipped with two ear cups.
