What the EPYC 4005 model suffixes mean

P suffix

AMD EPYC 4005 processors with the P suffix are designed for single-socket servers. Only one CPU can therefore be installed per motherboard. The EPYC 4245 without a P suffix is also intended exclusively for systems with one processor socket within this series.

PX suffix

The AMD EPYC 4585PX combines the single-socket design with AMD 3D V-Cache. With 128 MB of L3 cache, the CPU is particularly suitable for cache-intensive databases, game servers, development environments and other applications that frequently access recurring data.

AMD EPYC 4005 or EPYC 4004?

The AMD EPYC 4005 series is based on the newer Zen 5 architecture and supports DDR5 memory at speeds of up to 5,600 MT/s. It offers six to 16 cores and is particularly suitable for modern hosting, development, database and business servers.

AMD EPYC 4004 processors use Zen 4 and support DDR5 at speeds of up to 5,200 MT/s. The older series offers a wider selection of models, starting with four cores. The more suitable generation depends on motherboard support, budget and the required processing performance.

AMD EPYC 4005 processor compatibility

Socket

AMD EPYC 4005 processors use Socket AM5 and are intended exclusively for single-socket systems. Despite using a familiar socket, the CPU should only be installed in a motherboard that explicitly supports EPYC 4005.

Memory

The processors support two DDR5 memory channels at speeds of up to 5,600 MT/s. Compatible DDR5 ECC UDIMMs are required for professional servers. DDR5 RDIMMs for SP5 or SP6 platforms are not compatible.

Motherboard

An AM5 server motherboard with remote management or BMC is recommended for EPYC 4005. Check the CPU compatibility list, motherboard revision and required BIOS version before purchase.

Cooler

A compatible AM5 CPU cooler is required. It must be suitable for the TDP of the selected processor and the available height inside the server case. The EPYC 4005 models are rated for either 65 or 170 watts.
