Thermal Paste & Pads Create the Right Connection
For the use of a cooler on a processor, a medium is required that optimizes the heat transfer between the CPU's heat spreader and the cooler's cold plate (base plate). Thermal paste (thermal grease/compound) fills microscopic imperfections in the surfaces, allowing the heat to effectively transfer from one side to the other. Thermal pads and especially liquid metal applications (liquid metal pads) also fulfill this task. Additionally, retention modules and mounting kits are part of the accessories for CPU coolers. Only with these can some cooler models be used on certain motherboard sockets. Mounting kits for various sockets are now included, but attention should be paid when new sockets come to the market.
