Intel Core i7 Processors

Intel Core i7 processors include quad-core and hexa-core CPUs with Hyper-Threading, as well as eight-core processors without HT (starting from "Coffee Lake-S"). These CPUs are primarily designed for powerful gaming systems. The x86 microprocessors in the Intel Core i-series replaced the dual-core processors of the Core 2 family in late 2008. They are well-suited for office PCs, home office workstations, and high-performance gaming PCs.

Until the summer of 2018, Core i7 processors held the performance pinnacle for Intel in the consumer CPU market. Over time, new generations of Core i7 CPUs have been released for the performance and high-end segments.

Overview of Intel Core i7 Generations

  • 1st Generation: "Westmere" and "Nehalem" (2008)
  • 2nd Generation: "Sandy Bridge" (2011)
  • 3rd Generation: "Ivy Bridge" (2012)
  • 4th Generation: "Haswell" (2013)
  • 5th Generation: "Broadwell" (2015)
  • 6th Generation: "Skylake" (2015)
  • 7th Generation: "Kaby Lake" (2016), "Kaby Lake-X," and "Skylake-X" (both 2017)
  • 8th Generation: "Coffee Lake" (2017)
  • 9th Generation: "Coffee Lake-S" (2018)

The model numbers of Core i7 processors consist of the i7 suffix, the generation, and a 3-digit model designation. For example, "i7-7700K" represents a Core i7 processor from the 7th generation "Kaby Lake," and the prefix "K" (formerly "C" before Broadwell) indicates a model with an unlocked multiplier for overclocking. Additional model suffixes include "X" (extreme), "E" (embedded), "S" or "T" (lower TDP), and "P" (smaller or no integrated graphics).

Why Choose an Intel Core i7 CPU for a High-End Gaming PC?

While clock speed (measured in MHz) used to be the primary consideration for gaming CPUs, the increasing optimization of games and software for multi-core performance has made Intel's Core i7 series more relevant for PC gamers and computer enthusiasts. Hyper-Threading (HT), which virtually doubles the processor cores, has also contributed to this trend.

To maximize gaming performance from Core i7 processors, overclocking is recommended. Intel Core i7 CPUs with an unlocked multiplier are denoted by "K," "E," or "X" and can be overclocked via the BIOS to achieve higher frequencies. Caseking exclusively offers pretested CPUs with guaranteed overclocking clock rates from Roman "der8auer" Hartung, one of the world's best overclockers.

As a special highlight, the Intel Core i7 pretested CPUs are exclusively offered as the "der8auer Edition." These CPUs undergo "delidding" (the removal of the integrated heat spreader) to improve cooling performance. Depending on the desired version, the der8auer CPUs are additionally equipped with a lapped heat spreader or a replacement silver heat spreader to further enhance cooling performance.
