Cube cases get their name from their cube-shaped design. Despite their compact size, they offer room for powerful components and effective cooling. They are ideal for living room setups and for transporting your PC to LAN parties. Many NAS cases are also considered cube cases because they often feature a square design.
What defines a cube PC case?
The main distinction from other PC cases is the characteristic square design. Other features are similar to those of mini PC cases:
- Motherboard compatibility: Depending on the model, cube cases support mATX and Mini-ITX motherboards
- Hardware clearance: The space for hardware in cube-shaped cases is limited. The maximum supported size often depends on other installed components
- Air cooling: Some models support only a limited number of fans
- Water cooling: In most cases, cube cases do not support water cooling, although there are exceptions
- Drive slots: Typically between one and four 2.5- or 3.5-inch drives can be installed
Cube cases for external water cooling
Some cube cases allow you to connect your water cooling system externally. For this purpose, hose pass-throughs are integrated into the case. Other models are large enough to support simple custom water-cooling loops.
NAS cases
NAS cases are mainly used for server systems and workstations. These larger cube-style cases can house powerful hardware and multiple hard drives, which also makes them suitable for gaming PCs. To ensure effective cooling, they usually support several fans. Thanks to their typically simple design, they fit unobtrusively into almost any room.

Is a cube case suitable for high-end hardware?
That strongly depends on the size of the cube case. If there is enough room for large hardware and cooling, then yes. However, in many cases space is quite limited.
Do cube cases provide good airflow?
This depends on the model. If only one fan can be installed, the hardware should match that limitation. If multiple fans are supported, stronger hardware can also be used since airflow improves accordingly.
